What is Sensory Processing?

Sensory processing is how a child receives and responds to stimuli in their environment.

• Has a hard time sitting still
• May push or shove others
• May avoid certain things completely
• Has difficulty responding to their name
• Is a picky eater
• May get upset very easily
• Is sensitive to lights, sounds, textures, tastes, or scents
• Falls down or crashes into things on purpose
• Dislikes bath time, brushing teeth, or hair care

Occupational Therapy helps a child gain independence in everyday activities that are found to be meaningful. This can look like a child having difficulty with completing fasteners, due to poor fine motor skills. Another child could have difficulty sitting still and completing their work because they keep getting distracted. A different child could be facing significant safety concerns as they leave a store, running into a parking lot and unaware of their surroundings.
